Life at Sea:

Types of Ships

.01 Bulk Carriers

* Cargo: Dry bulk goods like coal, iron ore, grain, bauxite, cement. * Features: Large cargo holds, hatch covers, cranes (sometimes), slow speed. * Types: Handysize, Handymax, Panamax, Capesize, Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC).

.02 Container Ships

* Cargo: Standardized shipping containers (20ft, 40ft). * Features: Fast, scheduled routes, container bays on deck and below. * Special Types: Reefer container ships (temperature-controlled goods).

.03 Tankers

* Cargo: Liquid cargo in bulk. * Types: * Crude Oil Tankers – Carry unrefined petroleum. * Product Tankers – Carry refined petroleum products (diesel, petrol, kerosene). * Chemical Tankers – Carry chemicals, acids. * Liquefied Gas Carriers – LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) & LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas).

.04 General Cargo Ships

* Cargo: Mixed cargo (machinery, bags, pallets, timber, vehicles). * Features: Multiple holds, cranes for loading/unloading, smaller ports access

.05 Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) Ships

* Cargo: Vehicles, trucks, trailers. * Features: Ramps for driving cargo on/off, large garage-like decks.

.06 Passenger Ships

* Cargo: Passengers (sometimes with cargo). * Types: * Cruise Ships – Luxury leisure travel. * Ferries – Short-distance transport for passengers and vehicles

.07 Offshore Vessels

* Purpose: Support oil and gas platforms. * Types: * AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) – Move rigs and supply them. * Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) – Carry cargo to offshore rigs. * Crew Boats – Transfer crew to/from platforms.

.08 Special Purpose Ships

* Research Vessels (ocean studies, weather data) * Cable Laying Ships (lay submarine communication cables) * Icebreakers (break sea ice for navigation) * Heavy Lift Ships (carry massive structures like oil rigs).
